If you are one of those guys who only has one pan, and it happens to be Teflon-coated, here’s some interesting information for you. First of all, if the Teflon is peeling off, that means you are ingesting a bit of it every time you use it. Teflon flakes do not count as edible fiber, OK? If you have a pan in pathetic condition, please dispose of it, or give it to your enemy. Actually, even if your Teflon pan is brand new, you should get rid of it.
The coating on non-stick cookware is made from a chemical called polytetrafluoroehtylene (PTEE), which is made from perfluorooctanic acid (PFOA). These compounds are known to cause cancer, thyroid problems, infertility in women, and low sperm count in men.
A recent study done by Danish researchers found that men with high blood levels of chemicals used for nonstick coating have lower sperm counts. Semen from 105 men (average age 19) were tested for the presence of PFOA and other related chemicals. It was found that men with the highest levels had half the number of normal sperm compared with men who had lower levels of the chemicals in their blood.
Take the Teflon Taste Test
Don’t be fooled by the manufacturers pitching that Teflon is inert and will not release poisonous gases into your food or into the air. Here’s a simple test you can do at home:
- Get a Teflon coated pan and fill it with about 2” of water.
- Bring the water to a boil, then shut of the heat.
- Add in one teaspoon of baking powder and mix into the water.
- Allow the mixture in the pan to cool off.
- Now take a drink of it and pay attention to what you taste.
By the way, unless you truly like the taste of plastic and also want to add some toxins into your body, please spit the liquid out after tasting. If the taste of Teflon can tinge the soda water, think what you are ingesting every time you make an omelet, pancake, or cook meat in the pan!
And just in case your girlfriend asks you to take care of her pet bird while she’s away, please take note that Teflon kills birds under normal cooking situations. There are numerous documented cases of aviary deaths caused by Teflon coated products, It is known to veterinarians as Teflon toxicosis.
